Again, you can do it as little or as much as you like. No need to shy away from it. Each week you get better and better. And with all the amazing blogs out there- they literally tell you how to do it.

On the road again...Some big news at Sunbasilgarden

We have had some pretty big and exciting news at our house that I can finally share. My husband has accepted a great new job opportunity and we are moving! - again :) Luckily I happen to fancy fresh starts and in this job market especially, I am just so very grateful.

With that being said, I wanted to let my customers and fans know chances are very strong that my online shops will be closed for a few months while we pack and transition. Most likely over the busy November and December months. I AM NOT CLOSING FOR GOOD. Perish the thought!!! Just till we settle in. I have done this before and it was actually really a really good break and I came back refreshed with new products and designs. In knowing myself, if I don't make soap daily I get kind of wacky around the edges, I suspect I will find a way to be open some of the time. But no promises.

Non Extreme Coupon Shopping

About 6 months ago, I became addicted to shopping with coupons. It all started while watching that TLC show. Now this post is not about stock piling a garage full of 1000 deodorants, or diving in dumpsters for millions of unused coupons. I thought it would be fun to share my other hobby, other than soap making, and how you too might want to consider the world of couponing, in a less extreme, practical way.

I save a minimum of 50% weekly at the grocery store, with my best trip ever being 90% and spend just a few hours a week.

Whether your looking to free up your budget and just reduce your food costs or have hit hard times and need to out of necessity, I will guarantee you it's quite a thrill and very much worth your efforts.

1. Get a coupon binder and get organized. This is crucial to your success. You can find baseball card clear holders at Target. Arrange by tabs and sections. There are plenty of how to videos on coupon blogs to help. This system allows you to see what you have when your planning your trip and quickly trash expired coupons. And be sure to take it with you shopping as you will always find an advertised sale.

2. I buy 4 Sunday newspapers. $6 is well worth the savings you will have that week. Also ask neighbors to pass theirs along to you if they don't use them. My sweet neighbor puts hers in my mail box every Sunday.

3. Sunday night I cut and organize. Normally in front of the TV. Take your 4 flyer's and divide them into 4 stacks of each page. That way when you clip- you cut once. Then load your binder. It's got to be done Sunday or come shopping time, you will be overwhelmed and quit.

4. When you get your stores weekly fl yer, sit down with some coffee, your binder and begin matching up sales items with items you have coupons for. Grocery stores normally will double coupons. Drug stores take face value. Get to know your store's coupon policy. This may take a few trips but once you get the hang of it, it will keep saving you more each month.

5. Follow coupon blogs. They will post up to the minute all the great deals to be printed online- Facebook coupons are the best. You can print two from each computer you have.

Here are some of my favorites I check daily.

6. As you begin to save, you will learn there are many items that you will never again pay money for. To name a few- Toothpaste, Mustard, Fabric Softener, Shampoo, and I rarely will spend more than a buck on a box of cereal. I have set a personal limit of 10 items of each in my stockpile. That way I do not spend money or my efforts on having more than I need for a year.

7. Share you good fortune. There are plenty of people across our country who are hungry. Donate extras to your church or food banks.

Hope these tips might point you in the direction of couponing. With the holidays approaching, its a great way to decrease the food budget too. The Timeless Joy of Legos

Legos are timeless. I still have a box of my original ones from when I was a kid. Dare I call them vintage :) My bro and I used to build stuff for hours. As a mommy to two little boys, Legos have been high on the birthday and Christmas list now for years. It's almost gotten out of control.

So of course, I had to add some Lego inspired soaps to Sunbasilgarden line up. And they have been a bit hit for sure. Scented in a Mountain Dewy scent sure to please. Custom Robot Puzzle Cookie... Say What!

We received the most creative and thoughtful Valentine's Day gift today from Mom-Mom Sunbasilgarden and I just had to share it here with you. It made us all say outloud, "say what!"

Check out this custom puzzle cookie she made just for our boys. It came wrapped in two packages with a note, explaining you will need to work together. So they joined their cookie pieces and whalla- Robot Cookie, complete with chocolate chip eyes. They got quite a kick out of it. And after the astonishment settled, we noticed it was a perfect match to their cards. How cool is this!

She also included these adorable Valentine's Day cookies. Each one is different from the other and best of all- they taste as amazing as they look.

One month in on healthy and fast cooking!

So here it is the end of Jan 2011. I made only two resolutions this year. First to strive for more balance in my life. My normal is to go all in, full tilt but this doesn't always lead to a happy life. Doing well on that one so far. Even took a few days off from Etsy.

Second resolution, learn to cook! I can spend 12 hours making soap but put me in front of the stove- and I get mad. So this is the year I stop using the tag line, "I can't cook" and do something about it. And first I had to find a style that works for me. It came in the form of two awesome cookbooks from Jessica Seinfeld. The Double Delicious series. What I love the most: healthy, easy and tasty food with the deceptive sneaking in of veggies.

I have pretty much cooked from these two books all month. I purchased a food processor and began making a collection of veggies, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, cauliflower and spinach. They are frozen and on the ready when I need them. I do most of my steaming on Sundays so its all done. Then away I go each day. We have only had a few boxes of cereal all month. I've made sweet potato french toast, applesauce muffins for breakfast. Amazing aloha chicken and even spinach brownies for dessert. Now the kids are finally on to all my deceptive veggies but they are getting into it too.

Thought it might be fun to share a post other than soap. Hope your New Year is off to a fun start.

Good bye Country - Hello Modern!

In an effort to help fight the winter blues, I pulled out the paint brushes and tackled a long standing item on my "to do" list. Remodel, (on a budget) the downstairs powder room.

Good bye Country and hello Modern.

I used this as a test to see if I could paint the existing 19 year old dated cabinets before I tackle the kitchen. And I'm quite pleased with the results. I will note, it took a lot of patience, 2 coats of BIN oil based primer, then 2 coats of latex Semi Gloss. The most difficult part was trying to find matching hinges so I did not need to drill new holes into the cabinet doors. After 2 trips to Lowe's, I gave up and purchased a good can of spray paint and used the existing hardware.

Now onto the new faucet. I was determined to learn how to do this. And I did. Again, two trips to Lowe's. Who knew you had to first uninstall and then go and purchase new piping?

A few extra dollars on new silver accents- including door knob and whalla... new and fresh!

I added some gorgeous prints from modernarteveryday, a soap dish from Bprdesigns, of course a few of my own soaps..and I'm still shopping on Etsy to cozy up the new place. Hope you enjoy a new blog post. And it's not about SOAP :)

What a wild ride it has been this year at Sunbasilgarden Soaps!

I was notified in October that I was selected to be the Dec 13th featured seller. My eyes glazed over in joy and then, a huge gulp- "that is quite close to Christmas!" I finished my last wholesale order and literally started work the very next day. I started with a strategy to decide what I was going to offer. I knew it had to be ready to ship that day so preparation was essential. I increased my men's line up and added more Holiday designs. I brought back some classics and omitted some of my more time consuming designs. Then ordered supply after supply and started 8 hour a day production. I knew having this time slot so close to Christmas was such a gift- but I had to have enough inventory to be ready to ship that day. No waiting, no delay.

The first two months went very smoothly. I was so careful to balance family life with soap. I did my grocery shopping, laundry first thing in the morning and even walked daily. However, right after Thanksgiving, I moved into 16 hour days of soaping as the day was quickly approaching. I learned to say no quite alot when asked for wholesale orders, custom, or giveaways. I also got some help! My neighbor and now very dear friend, Mrs. Wendy, began working with me, at first as soap cutter and then as soap wrapper. I'm super picky on how my soaps are wrapped and she is top knotch. By the end of the ride, she was making soap! We had so many fun days together in my studio and do not know how I would have done it without her. I'm so grateful for her support and keeping me sane.

So finally the big day arrives, and I'm hoping I sell some soap. The strike of noon and there I am front page and center. I had about 15 minutes to enjoy it and then the orders started coming in. Fast and furious. And I returned with fast and furious shipping. I got the best convo's from my friend, Amy, thepeachtree filling me in on what was going on. I had my head down and was filling orders.

What I didn't anticipate was the amont on convo's to answer. I had increased all of my inventory the night before but couldn't answer folks if I had more in stock until I got ahead of my shipping. Huge piece of advice - list your real inventory if given this opportunity. So what if you waste money on listing fees. You can't sell it if it's not there.

By the end of day one- I had shipped almost every order. My awesome mail carrier- Ms. Lisa arranged to have an Express Mail truck everyday for me. I lost track of how many orders I shipped but guessing over 1,500 packages in 5 days? My poor little Dymo shipping printer is on vacation now too.

Some of the things I would do different as a featured seller. I would list my true inventory right out of the gate. If you have 80 in stock..list it. I would also make the policy to only ship to the PayPal address. I would ship an order so fast but then find a convo a day later asking to ship to another address as gift. I would also learn ahead of time about PayPal's multiple shipping function. A big giant thank you to my good friend Loveleesoaps, who told me about it during day 1. I finally figured it out but learning something new in the heat of it wasn't exactly pretty. Be prepared for email and convo's. I ended with over 2500 emails in my in bin.

Well I thought it would be fun to write a little of my experience. I am so grateful for the opportunity, support and well wishes. It makes my heart flutter just a little faster to think of my little soaps being opened on Christmas morning or putting a smile on someone's face.

And I literally blushed at all the kind comments left on my interview and convo's sent by fellow Etsians. Talk about feeling the love.

I'm so thankful for my husband and boys working with me during my preparation. We are now on vacation and plan to snuggle in and spend time doing what is most important. Time together, loving each other.

I officially made my last summer soap design today. And it's a yummy, Strawberry Float. It's time to begin the coziest time of year. Fall and Halloween and then Christmas. Some of my absolute favorite times to create soaps. My brain has been working overtime and I wake up to write these ideas in my journal.

After a year of patience, we finally sold our house. Recessions do end and so grateful we were able to move to a bigger space. And better schools for our kiddies. One of my favorite features in our new house is my own designated soap studio. Some pictures to show you where the soapy fun takes place. I used to make all my soaps in our tiny kitchen which meant alot of starting and stopping. Not any more!

Our boys are away on their annual trip to the mountains with their grandparents. I know it sounds awesome..no cleaning, interruptions, messes...and it is really, really nice. However I miss them. But in the meantime, it's time to use this precious break for some new soap creations. I had this technique in my mind for some time and love the results.

At our house, my family knows if there is a sweet confection or treat sitting on the counter, it's most likely SOAP! So I even tried this time to prank them with a crinkling of a bag sound but they are on to me. Nonetheless, I'm thrilled with how realistic these new pretzel rod soaps turned out. I've been hooked on making soap since I made my first bar a little over a year ago. I feel so lucky to have found a medium that has limitless possibilities and such practicality all in one.

One of the most frequently asked questions that comes my way is how to get started. I kind of assume everyone knows about the fabulous duo, Anne-Marie and Debbie, Brambleberry and SoapyLove but in case you do not- take a look at these fabulous places to get started.

Blizzard Inspiration

What a historic time on the East coast. Back to back blizzards. Here in Delaware we normally get threats of snow, just to turn into ice storms or a few inches. But this winter, we have broken records with almost 3 feet of snow. 2 State of Emergency calls have kept many of us home. And although fun at first, it can be a recipe for cabin fever.

In an effort to keep cordial with my little family, I turned to soap. Check out my latest blizzard inspired soapy creations. Boy -it smells good here.

November was my last entry! Well I did have a wonderfully busy holiday season but that's a bit too much of a break. Well, dusting off the old blog, here's a little update.

I had a fantastic holiday soap season. My customers were so much fun. I was literally soaping 12 hour days for 2 months straight. And a 550 piece order to my dear etsy friend, "K" in France.

I closed down shop before Christmas and spent two weeks with my husband and boys. We had so much fun just spending morning and night together. Then we headed South to Atlanta, GA to to spend a week visiting family, including Uncle Kenny who came in from Germany.

It's mid January. Soap shop is open. I needed to restock almost every single line. Added lots of new Valentine's Day soaps too. My wholesale shop has also been reopened and just filled two orders.

Off to create new designs this week including SOFT PRETZELS SOAP!

A Day in the life of Mr. Boo the Soap Ghost!

Mr. Boo, a fine soapy fellow that he is starts each morning around 7am. He waits for his alarm and then quickly flies from his warm fuzzy bed.

Always wise to keep those teeth a ghostly white, he begins with a brush of the teeth.

Moving into his morning shave. Electric razor for this guy. All about the modern convenience.

Mr. Boo starts his day with a bowl of Special K.

And then he's off to so some shopping at Target.
